NRI Mutual Fund Post-TDS Calculator
See the TDS an AMC actually deducts on your mutual fund redemption as an NRI, versus what you likely owe after filing.
The total amount you originally invested (Rs), across all units being redeemed.
The amount you will receive on redeeming these units (Rs), before any TDS is deducted.
How many months you held these units. Determines whether an equity fund gain is short-term or long-term.
Equity-oriented funds hold at least 65% in Indian equities (Sections 111A/112A). Debt/other funds are "Specified Mutual Funds" under Section 50AA -- all gains are slab-taxed, regardless of holding period.
Debt fund gains are added to your income and taxed at your real marginal slab rate -- not the flat 31.2% TDS the AMC deducts upfront. Not used for equity fund gains, which are taxed at flat special rates regardless of your slab.

This calculator illustrates NRI mutual fund TDS mechanics under Sections 111A/112A (equity) and 50AA (debt/specified funds), per Finance (No. 2) Act 2024 and Finance Act 2023. It does NOT model surcharge (relevant only for very high total Indian income), DTAA treaty relief on capital gains, units of debt funds acquired before 1 April 2023 (which can carry old indexation/LTCG rules), or cases where an AMC withholds TDS on gross proceeds rather than net gain due to missing cost-basis records. Exactly how an AMC applies the Rs 1.25 lakh equity LTCG exemption at the moment of TDS deduction can also vary by fund house. Verify your specific situation with a CA before making investment decisions.

How the NRI Mutual Fund TDS Calculator Works
When an NRI redeems mutual fund units, the AMC/RTA is required to deduct TDS under Section 195 on the capital gain -- before you see a rupee -- at fixed rates that don't know or care what your real total income is. This calculator shows the gap between what actually gets withheld at redemption and what you may genuinely owe once you file your Indian tax return.
Equity-oriented funds (65%+ domestic equity) are taxed under Sections 111A/112A: short-term gains (held <= 12 months) at a flat 20.8% on the full gain, long-term gains (held > 12 months) at 13.0% but only on the portion above ₹1,25,000 in a financial year. Debt/non-equity funds have no long-term category at all since the Finance Act 2023 changes -- every gain is deemed short-term and TDS is withheld at a flat 31.2%, the same rate used for NRO FD interest, as an approximation of the top slab.
Frequently asked questions
Why is TDS on my debt fund redemption so much higher than on my equity fund?
Debt/non-equity fund gains lost long-term capital gains status and indexation entirely under the Finance Act 2023, and are now taxed at your income slab rate with no special concession. Since the AMC can't know your actual slab, it withholds at a flat 31.2% (an approximation of the top slab) rather than guessing lower.
I'm in a lower tax slab -- can I get some of the TDS back?
Yes, for the debt-fund leg especially: if your genuine slab rate is below 30%, file an Indian ITR to claim the difference as a refund. The equity-fund rates (20.8%/13.0%) are flat special rates under the law itself, so TDS and actual liability there are usually equal.
Does the ₹1,25,000 LTCG exemption apply per fund or across all my equity funds?
It's a single financial-year threshold across all your Section 112A long-term equity gains combined, not per fund. How individual AMCs apply it at the moment of TDS deduction on any one redemption can vary -- treat the figures here as an estimate and reconcile the full picture at ITR time.
