How the Rent Receipt Generator Works

To claim HRA exemption, most employers require monthly (or at least periodic) rent receipts as proof of payment -- this tool generates print-ready receipts for a single month or an entire financial year in one go, with all the details a payroll department typically asks for, using nothing but your browser's built-in print function.

It also surfaces the two compliance rules that most often trip people up: your landlord's PAN must be furnished to your employer if your total ANNUAL rent exceeds ₹1,00,000, and any single cash payment receipt above ₹5,000 legally requires a revenue stamp (this doesn't apply to bank transfer, UPI, or cheque payments). The generator flags both automatically based on the numbers you enter, so you're not caught out at HR verification time.

Frequently asked questions

My landlord refuses to share their PAN -- what are my options?

You can still claim HRA exemption using a declaration from the landlord stating they don't have a PAN, though employer policies on accepting this vary -- check with your payroll/HR team on what documentation they'll accept in this specific situation.

Do I need a revenue stamp if I pay rent via bank transfer or UPI?

No -- the revenue stamp requirement under the Indian Stamp Act applies only to cash payment receipts above ₹5,000. Bank transfer, UPI, and cheque payments are exempt from this requirement entirely.

Can I generate receipts for a period where my rent amount changed partway through the year?

Yes -- generate two separate batches, one for the months at the old rent amount and one for the months at the new amount, rather than trying to average them into a single figure.
