SmartDaddy does not endorse, partner with, receive referral commissions from, or accept payment from any platform named on this page. They appear here because they are, as of the research date below, among the platforms most commonly used or discussed by Indian investors for this purpose. Fees, minimums, and app quality in this space change often — confirm every number directly on the provider’s own website before opening an account or transferring money.
If Low Cost or Ease of Use Matters Most to You
Lowest cost, on the numbers gathered here: Winvesta (zero stated brokerage, lower forex markup) and Interactive Brokers (lowest per-share commission, and the cheapest internal currency conversion of any platform compared) tend to come out cheapest — but Winvesta has a much smaller, weaker-rated app, and IBKR has a steeper learning curve than the Indian apps. The cheapest option is not automatically the easiest one.
Easiest to use, on published app-store ratings and user base: INDmoney (4.6★, 10M+ downloads) and Vested (4.7★) are the most widely used and best-reviewed apps here, aimed specifically at first-time direct US investors — at a somewhat higher forex markup than the cheapest options above. There is no single "best" platform here; it depends on whether saving on fees or getting the more polished, more widely used app matters more to you.
Direct Foreign Brokers
You open the account directly with a US broker and send money yourself via your own bank’s LRS remittance.
Charles Schwab (Schwab One International)
Direct account with a US broker; you fund it yourself via your own bank’s outward remittance under LRS
- KYC / Account Opening
- Schwab’s own international account-opening forms, plus a signed W-8BEN, passport copy, and a utility bill for address proof.
- Minimum Deposit
- None stated.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Commonly reported as 1–2 weeks for document review and account activation.
- Brokerage
- $0 for online US-listed stock and ETF trades.
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- $0 account maintenance/inactivity fee. $25 fee on outgoing wires.
- Forex Conversion Markup
- Schwab itself does not publish an INR conversion markup -- you convert INR to USD through your own Indian bank or a remittance partner BEFORE wiring the money, so the real forex cost here is your bank’s wire/forex-card rate, not a Schwab fee. Compare your bank’s markup before choosing how to send the money.
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Very wide -- essentially the full range of US-listed stocks, ETFs, and options.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- Issues standard US brokerage tax documents (e.g. Form 1099 for US tax purposes); does not prepare Indian ITR or Form 67 filings for you.
- Mobile App
- Android: 3.2★ (29.6K reviews) · iOS: Available
One global app shared with all Schwab clients -- not India-tailored, and its Play Store rating is on the lower end of the platforms compared here. - Best For
- Investors comfortable with a fully foreign-broker process (their own LRS remittance, W-8BEN, no Indian hand-holding) who want $0 US equity commissions.
Interactive Brokers (IBKR)
Direct account with a US broker; you fund it yourself via your own bank’s outward remittance under LRS
- KYC / Account Opening
- IBKR’s own account-opening forms plus a suitability questionnaire.
- Minimum Deposit
- $0 (confirmed directly on IBKR’s own pricing page, Sep 2026). Note: IBKR’s advertised "$0 commission" Lite plan is for US residents only -- Indian investors use IBKR Pro, which is not commission-free.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Often same-day to a few days once documents are verified -- generally faster than Schwab’s international process.
- Brokerage
- IBKR Pro: $0.005 per share (minimum $1 per order), or a tiered per-share rate as low as $0.0005–$0.0035 at higher volumes.
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- $0 minimum balance requirement, $0 maintenance fee (confirmed on IBKR’s own pricing page).
- Forex Conversion Markup
- The money still arrives via your own bank’s LRS remittance (same caveat as Schwab), but IBKR is the one platform here that also lets you convert currency internally, if you deposit in a currency other than USD, at a genuinely narrow spread (independently reported around 0.002%–0.2% of trade value) -- far tighter than a typical bank’s forex-card markup. Worth understanding before assuming your bank’s rate is your only option.
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Very wide -- US-listed stocks, ETFs, options, plus access to dozens of other global exchanges from the same account.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- Issues standard US brokerage tax documents; does not prepare Indian ITR or Form 67 filings for you.
- Mobile App
- Android: 4.5★ (2.63K reviews) · iOS: Available
IBKR now offers a newer, simplified app ("IBKR GlobalTrader") alongside its older, more complex Trader Workstation (TWS) -- the simplified app is the one rated above and the better starting point for most individual investors. - Best For
- Larger or more active portfolios, and cost-conscious investors who want the lowest per-share commission and the cheapest internal FX conversion of the platforms compared here -- at the cost of a steeper learning curve than the Indian intermediary apps.
Indian Intermediary Platforms
Indian KYC, an India-first app, and the platform itself handles routing your money to a US broker-dealer or a GIFT City IFSC route.
Vested Finance
Indian platform; routes your LRS remittance to a US broker-dealer (DriveWealth) behind the scenes
- KYC / Account Opening
- Indian KYC -- PAN and Aadhaar -- handled inside the app.
- Minimum Deposit
- None stated; fractional shares from $1.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Typically same-day, fully digital.
- Brokerage
- Roughly 0.25% per trade on the free/basic plan; lower with the paid Premium plan (≈₹249/month, per third-party comparisons -- confirm current pricing in-app).
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- Withdrawal fee reported around $11 per third-party comparison sources; confirm current figure in-app before relying on it.
- Forex Conversion Markup
- Sources disagree materially: Vested’s own comparison content cites a narrower 75–100 paise-per-dollar markup, while an independent competitor comparison cites 1.5–2%. Treat this as a genuine open range, not a typo -- confirm the live rate shown in-app at the moment you transfer, since this is exactly the kind of fee platforms don’t always headline.
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Curated but broad -- thousands of US-listed names.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- SIPC-protected custody via DriveWealth; does not prepare Indian ITR or Form 67 filings for you.
- Mobile App
- Android: 4.7★ (10.5K reviews) · iOS: Available
Highest Android star rating of the platforms compared here, though a smaller review base than INDmoney. - Best For
- First-time direct US investors who want a simple, India-first onboarding and a well-reviewed app, without dealing with a foreign broker’s own process.
INDmoney
Indian platform; offers both an LRS-based route and a GIFT City IFSC route
- KYC / Account Opening
- Indian KYC -- PAN and Aadhaar -- handled inside the app.
- Minimum Deposit
- None stated.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Typically same-day, fully digital.
- Brokerage
- Roughly 0.25% per trade, capped per trade per third-party comparisons -- confirm current figure in-app.
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- Reported as bundled into the forex spread rather than itemised separately (per independent comparison; not independently confirmed on INDmoney’s own fee page as of this research pass).
- Forex Conversion Markup
- Independently reported in the 1–1.5% range -- confirm the live rate shown in-app before transferring.
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Broad via the LRS route; narrower via the GIFT City route.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- SIPC-protected custody; bundles US and Indian holdings in one portfolio view, which can make consolidated tracking easier at tax-filing time, though it does not itself prepare ITR or Form 67 filings.
- Mobile App
- Android: 4.6★ (458K reviews) · iOS: Available
By far the largest review base and download count (10M+) of any platform compared here. - Best For
- Investors who want US and Indian investments tracked in one widely-used app, and who value a large, established user base over the narrowest possible fees.
Winvesta
Indian platform; custody via FCA (UK)- and SEC/FINRA (US)-regulated partners
- KYC / Account Opening
- Indian KYC -- PAN and Aadhaar -- handled inside the app.
- Minimum Deposit
- Reported as low as ₹80 (fractional investing) per Winvesta’s own comparison content -- confirm current minimum on their site.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Reported as free and fully digital; specific turnaround time not independently confirmed.
- Brokerage
- Reported as zero brokerage per trade -- the lowest headline commission of the platforms compared here. Confirm this still holds and isn’t offset elsewhere before relying on it.
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- Reported $10 withdrawal fee; no account-opening or inactivity fee per Winvesta’s own comparison content.
- Forex Conversion Markup
- Reported around 1% -- among the lower forex markups of the Indian platforms compared here, per Winvesta’s own comparison content (note: Winvesta is comparing itself favourably in that source, so cross-check independently before treating this as neutral).
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Reported as 11,000+ securities -- broader than the other Indian platforms compared here.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- Not independently confirmed for this research pass.
- Mobile App
- Android: 3.3★ (446 reviews) · iOS: Available
Notably smaller review base and a meaningfully lower star rating than Vested or INDmoney -- worth weighing against its low headline fees, not ignoring. - Best For
- Cost-conscious investors prioritising the lowest brokerage/forex combination, who are willing to accept a less-polished, less-reviewed app than the two more established Indian platforms.
Dhan
Indian platform; GIFT City IFSC route, launched for US stocks/ETFs in 2026 -- the newest entrant compared here
- KYC / Account Opening
- Indian KYC -- PAN and Aadhaar -- via the same Dhan account used for domestic trading, if you already have one.
- Minimum Deposit
- Not independently confirmed for this research pass.
- Typical Account-Opening Time
- Fast if you already hold a Dhan domestic trading account; not independently confirmed for a fresh account.
- Brokerage
- 0.25% of transaction value, minimum $0.01, per independent review coverage.
- Account & Withdrawal Fees
- ₹0 account maintenance. Funding transfers above $100 reported as free; below $100, a flat $1 fee. Withdrawals reported as free.
- Forex Conversion Markup
- Not separately published in the sources checked for this research pass -- confirm the live rate in-app before transferring.
- Stock/ETF Universe
- Not independently confirmed for this research pass.
- Tax-Reporting Support
- Some coverage of Dhan’s GIFT City route mentions potential Indian tax treatment differences for IFSC-routed investments -- NOT independently verified against a primary source in this research pass, and not stated here as a claimed benefit. Confirm with a tax advisor before treating this as an advantage.
- Mobile App
- Android: 4.2★ (61.1K reviews) · iOS: Available
Same app used for Dhan’s much larger domestic trading business (1Cr+/10M+ downloads) -- a familiar app if you’re already a Dhan user, but the US-investing feature itself is the newest and least track-tested of the platforms compared here. - Best For
- Existing Dhan domestic-trading users who want US exposure without a separate app, and who are comfortable being early adopters of a newer product.
Platforms Deliberately Not Listed Here
Plus500 and other CFD/forex-trading apps: These are NOT stock-investing platforms -- they offer Contracts for Difference (CFDs), a leveraged derivative where you never own the underlying share, betting only on price movement. That is a fundamentally different (and materially riskier) product from buying real US shares through the platforms above, and RBI’s LRS rules do not permit remitting money for leveraged forex/CFD trading in the first place. Plus500 specifically does not accept clients from India at all, per its own stated policy. Excluded on purpose, not by omission.
Groww: Groww discontinued its US-stock-investing feature for new accounts in late 2023 and, as far as could be confirmed in this research pass, has not relaunched it. Mentioned here only because it’s still commonly searched for.
How the Money Actually Moves
Every route above ultimately relies on the RBI’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme (LRS), which lets a resident Indian remit up to $250,000 per financial year overseas. TCS (Tax Collected at Source) applies above ₹10 lakh remitted in a year — nil up to that threshold, 20% above it — and is a reclaimable advance-tax credit at ITR filing time, not a final cost. Your bank will need a Form A2 declaration for the remittance. For foreign brokers (Schwab, IBKR) you convert INR to USD through your own bank before wiring; for the Indian platforms above, the platform itself handles the conversion after you fund your account in INR.
