Can US and Canada NRIs Invest in Indian Mutual Funds?

Why This Is Even a Question

NRIs from most countries can invest in Indian mutual funds with no special restriction beyond standard NRI KYC. US and Canada NRIs are the exception, and the reason is FATCA -- the US Foreign Account Tax Compliance Act, which requires foreign financial institutions (including Indian AMCs) to identify and report accounts held by US taxpayers to the US IRS, via an agreement India signed with the US in 2015.

For many Indian AMCs, taking on that ongoing FATCA reporting burden for a relatively small slice of their investor base was not worth it, so a number of them simply stopped onboarding fresh US/Canada-resident NRI investors outright. Since then, several have resumed -- but usually with extra conditions (an offline paper application instead of online onboarding, an additional FATCA declaration, or exclusions on certain scheme types), and there is no single official, permanent registry of who currently accepts what. This is a genuinely fast-moving, fund-house-by-fund-house policy question, not a fixed rule.

What the Extra Paperwork Usually Looks Like

Where an AMC does accept US/Canada NRIs, the friction usually takes one of a few forms: an offline/physical application instead of the instant online KYC other NRIs get, an additional signed FATCA self-declaration on top of standard NRI paperwork, or exclusions on specific scheme types (commonly New Fund Offers or certain closed-ended funds) even while the AMC's regular open-ended schemes remain open to you. None of this is insurmountable, but it does mean US/Canada NRIs generally cannot expect the same fully-online, same-day onboarding experience other NRIs get.

Check Current Eligibility, Not a Snapshot

Because AMC policy on this specific question drifts faster than most financial rules -- sometimes month to month -- this article deliberately does not list which fund houses currently accept US/Canada NRIs. That list lives in the AMC Eligibility Checker tool on this site instead, where each entry carries its own "last verified" date so you can see exactly how current it is, and it is spot-checked on a rolling basis rather than written once and left to go stale. Even so, always confirm directly with the specific AMC before investing -- policies can change between verification checks.

Once You Are In: Tax Treatment Is the Same as Any NRI

FATCA affects whether an AMC will onboard you, not how your gains are taxed once you are invested -- US/Canada NRIs are taxed on Indian mutual fund capital gains exactly the same way as any other NRI. Equity-oriented funds (≥65% domestic equity): 20.8% flat TDS on short-term gains (held ≤12 months), 13% flat TDS on long-term gains (held >12 months) above ₹1,25,000/year. Debt/non-equity funds: all gains treated as short-term, no indexation, TDS withheld at a flat 31.2% approximation of the top slab -- the same "TDS deducted vs tax actually owed" gap the NRI Mutual Fund Post-TDS Calculator on this site is built to surface.
