DTAA Rates for Singapore-Resident NRIs

The India-Singapore DTAA caps both dividends and interest at 15% for an ordinary individual investor -- below India's 20.8% domestic dividend rate and well below the 31.2% domestic NRO interest rate. A lower 10% dividend rate exists in this treaty, but only for a company holding 25%+ of the Indian company's shares; a lower 10% interest rate also exists, but only for a bank or financial institution -- neither carve-out applies to a typical retail investor, who gets the 15% general rate on both. Still worth claiming with a Tax Residency Certificate and Form 10F, since 15% beats India's domestic rates on both counts.

CRS Reporting Applies

Singapore participates in the OECD Common Reporting Standard, so your Indian financial accounts are visible to Singapore's tax authority via automatic CRS exchange -- there is no FATCA-style AMC onboarding restriction the way US/Canada NRIs face.

Accounts to Set Up

The standard NRE (Singapore-earned income, tax-free) plus NRO (India-sourced income, taxable) combination applies -- no Singapore-specific account restriction.
